What to Do if Your Car Breaks Down Far from Home in the Middle of Nowhere at Night
Taking Your Car Off the Road – If your vehicle breaks down while you are on the road, your first major step is to get your vehicle off of the road. Make sure to turn on your emergency caution lights. It is best to get your vehicle off the road before it stops if possible, so when signs of vehicle failure occur begin moving off the road. Also make sure you have enough room to open your door safely if possible. If your vehicle is not in motion you will need to push your car off the road. Make sure your vehicle is in neutral when pushing the vehicle. Hopefully you get some help when pushing your vehicle to the side of the road. If you were evolved in an accident leave your vehicle in the same place. Often police officers will need to access the cause of the accident. Once the officers give the approval you can then move your vehicle off the road if it is possible.
Wait for Tow Truck Away from the Vehicle – So many people will wait inside their vehicle or near their vehicle until the towing company arrives. However this is dangerous especially at night. When you wait stand on shoulder side of the vehicle and a few steps away if possible, never stand in the front, road side, or rear of the vehicle in the event another drive fails to see you or your vehicle. Having you emergency lights helps or if you have flares or emergency cones, they can help give some added warning. Another useful tool is a flashlight with a blinking setting.
Telling Family & Friends About Your Car Breakdown – It is always a good idea to contact a family member or friend to let them know your situation. Tell them where you broke down at and if possible meet you where you broke down and wait with you until the towing company arrives. Most people prefer riding home with a familiar face rather than the towing truck or a cab driver. If on one can come it is still good for someone to know your whereabouts.
