When it comes to your car there are so many different working parts that all help to make it run properly. You may know some information about how it all works or you may know nothing at all. One car part that most people have some knowledge of is the car battery. Today Citywide Towing Service is going to take some time to talk about the car battery so that you can have more accurate information about what it does and how to charge it.
How Does a Car Battery Work?
Let’s start with what a car battery does. The battery in your car is what helps your car start every time you turn it on. Your battery supplies an electrical current to your vehicle so that the engine will start up. Once the engine is going the other parts in your car power your car. When your battery is dead your car will not start.
Most drivers find themselves with a dead battery at least once or twice in their lifetime. Many times there are not warning signs that your battery is getting ready to die. One day you will go out to your car and it simply will not start. If your car will not start you will need to jumpstart your car. When you start driving it is a good idea to learn how to properly jumpstart a battery so that when it happens you are fully prepared.
How to Jump Start a Dead Car Battery
To jumpstart a car you will need a set of jumper cables. Jumper cables should be part of your emergency roadside kit that you keep in your vehicle at all times. You will also want to keep a pair of work gloves to use when you need to work on your car. Once you have your jumper cables out you will need another car to help you jumpstart your car. Next you will need to park the cars close enough to each other for the jumper cables to reach both car batteries. Turn off the vehicle with the good battery. Then connect the jumper cables to the car with the dead battery. You will connect the red positive jumper cable to the red positive post. Then connect the other red positive jumper cable to the car with the charged battery. Next connect the black negative jumper cable first to the car with the charged battery and then to the car with the dead battery. Then you are ready to start the car with the charged battery. Let it sit and idle for five to ten minutes. Now try starting the car with the dead battery. If the car with the dead battery starts you will want to remove the jumper cables in the opposite order that you put them on.
Test Your Car Battery to See if it is Good
After your battery has been jumpstarted you will want to drive it to your local automotive parts store. They can come and out and test your battery to see if it needs to be replaced or not. If it needs to be replaced they can help you get a new battery for your car. If it does not need to be replaced they will also let you know that too.
