Most people do not pay their tires too much mind. With hurried schedules and seemingly an abundance of circumstances that make you late more often than early, checking the state of your tires isn’t even a concern for most. Unfortunately, not realizing how worn your tire tread is until it is too late, often leaves you stranded with tires that are no longer operable. You can avoid waiting until it is too late as you hear screeching or popping sounds to have your tires replaced. Not only is worn out tires an inconvenience when they finally give, but it is a danger to you and others on the road. Serious accidents on the road can be the result of worn and damaged tires for a number of reasons, but it greatly affects the wheel balance. You can avert the never-ending scenarios by ensuring you include routine tire maintenance in the overall care of your vehicle and regularly checking the condition of your tires. With that in mind, we at Citywide Towing would like to relate a few red flags that suggest your tires are worn out and need replacing soon before catastrophe strikes.
Symptoms of Bad Tires
1) Check the Tires: As basic and mundane as it sounds, checking your tires is something is often overlooked by most drivers. Take the extra few minutes before you start the driving of the day and check the condition of your tires. They should have visible grooves and ridges without any wear and tear on them. Additionally, inspect for adjoining bars forming between the treads. While doing your inspection also look to see if you picked up any foreign objects that might cause a flat, such as nails or screws.
2) Tire Penny Assessment: One of the best ways to inspect the tires for healthy grooves and ridges is to grab a penny to look for any potential problems on the treads. Simply place the penny in the center of the tread with the head facing up. If you can see the top of the penny head, you must replace the tires immediately. Keep in mind that you will have to eventually replace the threads within a few months in the event you can see the hair on the top of Honest Abe’s head on the coin. If you do not see the hair and the tires pass the penny test, your tires are still good, but just be sure to the penny test once a month to keep tabs on your tires.
3) Tire Measuring: A professional is better equipped to handle this part of the inspection as they have the experience and tools to check the tread for wear and/or damage. Each wheel is spun as part of the diagnostic testing after your vehicle is raised high above on a dolly. The diameters are precisely measured as a part of the efficient maintenance. When your tires need to be rotated ask the professionals to examine the tires as well.
