No one wants to find themselves stranded on the side of the road. Unfortunately, we have all experienced it or will experience it at one point in our lives. The most important thing to remember when you find yourself on the side of the road is safety. It can be dangerous as your find other cars whizzing past you with no way to get away from them. Citywide Towing is here to share some tips to keep you safe the next time you find yourself stranded on the side of the road.
Get Off the Road as Far as Possible
The number one safety risk when you are stranded on the side of the road is not getting far enough off the road. When you are so close, it is difficult for other cars to keep their distance in heavy traffic. Hopefully, when you pull off, you can get to an area with a decent amount of space to pull off the road.
Make Yourself Visible to Other Vehicles
It can be difficult for other cars on the road to see you until they are very close. This is especially true for large trucks and RVs. Use your hazard lights and caution cones or triangles and even flares if you have them to alert other drivers that something is going on. The sooner other traffic sees you, the better
Stay in Your Car & Lock the Doors
You never know who you might come across on the side of the road. It is always safest to stay in your vehicle with the doors locked while you wait for help. This is the best call even if it isn’t dark, but especially during dusk and night hours.
Know Your Current Location
It is difficult to get somebody to help you quickly when you don’t have a good understanding of where you are. Look for mile markers and other signs to give clear directions to the professional roadside assistance that you call.
Be Prepared Beforehand
Having a roadside assistance kit in your car for these kinds of emergencies could save your life. Of course, you never want to find yourself stranded, but it may happen, and if and when it does, you want to be prepared for it. In your kit you want to include:
• Flags or Flares
• Jumper Cables
• Heavy Duty Rope
• Blankets and Other Warm Clothing
• First Aid Kit
