Stay Calm if Your Tire Blows Out
Don’t panic, try to stay calm. You don’t want to crank the steering wheel to get on the side of the road quickly. You also don’t want to step on the brake because it can cause your vehicle to spin out of control. Just stay calm while driving your car over to the side of the road to safely inspect for any damage.
Which Way Should You Steer if You have a Blowout?
When you blow your tire your car is going to want to pull to one side, wobble, or even fishtail. Try to keep the wheel as straight as you can. You will need to resist the urge to turn the wheel. If you turn the wheel too sharp with all the wobble or fishtailing, you could overcorrect your car. This could cause you to drift into another lane or hit another driver.
Gently Press Gas Pedal
While you are staying calm, gently press the gas pedal. Accelerating slightly after a tire blowout can help you regain control of your vehicle. Then continue to maintain going forward. Once you have control of your vehicle, step off the gas pedal slowly. So you can start to slow down while trying to get to the side of the road.
Allow Car to Slow Itself Down
When you are driving after you just blew your tire, make sure you turn on your hazard lights. You want to alert the other drivers around you that something is wrong with your car and you are going slower than you should be. Once your speed finally drops below 30mph, then gently step on the breaks and guide your vehicle off the road to a safe spot where another car cannot hit you.
