Often overlooked heroes of the road are tow truck drivers. They rescue stranded drivers from virtually anywhere and with the many scenarios they find themselves in, the possibilities are endless. Safety Tips when Passing By a Tow Truck Hooking Up a Vehicle
1) Reduce Speed. Though an obvious safety tip, it is one worth stressing over again. It is important you reduce your speeds when you see a tow truck driver retrieving a down vehicle; whether they are in the middle of the road getting a vehicle involved in an accident or they are pulled off the side of the road rescuing a down vehicle. The tow truck driver may be out on the road securing or inspecting the broken-down vehicle, so reducing speed during any type of roadside emergency is equally important. Not only is it for safety concerns but also as common courtesy. As the tow truck drivers face enough stress during the daily course of their jobs, they don’t need to be concerned with unsafe drivers recklessly speeding down the road in their direction.
2) Change Lanes. Where it may be fairly obvious to some, it is not always so to others, and that is to switch lanes as soon as possible. Assuming traffic permits, it is the safety of you and especially the tow truck driver that with you on the far side of the road you won’t risk striking the tow truck. Try to do your best to navigate past the tow truck with as much space as possible if the traffic or road does not opt for lane changing; should be simple enough at reduced speeds. The last thing you want to do is clip a vehicle so be sure to switch lanes as quickly as possible if possible.
3) Remain Focused and Relaxed. Keep your eyes focused on the road and surroundings. Tow trucks are easy to spot and you should have plenty of time to react. Safe driving should always be practiced and especially so when the tow truck drivers are hard at work.
