Simply place the penny in the center of the tread with the head facing up. If you can see the top of the penny head, you must replace the tires immediately. Keep in mind that you will have to eventually replace the threads within a few months in the event you can see the hair on the top of Honest Abe’s head on the coin. If you do not see the hair and the tires pass the penny test, your tires are still good, but just be sure to the penny test once a month to keep tabs on your tires.
3) Tire Measuring: A professional is better equipped to handle this part of the inspection as they have the experience and tools to check the tread for wear and/or damage. Each wheel is spun as part of the diagnostic testing after your vehicle is raised high above on a dolly. The diameters are precisely measured as a part of the efficient maintenance.
